National Small Business Week Events

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Below are just some of the SBDC events occuring across New York State in recognition of Small Business Week:

The Pace University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is partnering with the US Small Business Administration (SBA) to help entrepreneurs identify and respond to government contract opportunities, as well as deliver on those contracts for which they are selected. The workshop will highlight contracting resources available for small businesses and strategies for how to increase your likelihood of obtaining contracts from government agencies and prime contractors

  • Understand the systems involved in government contracting
  • Learn about the contracting support for small businesses provided by the Small Business Administration
  • Learn more about how to increase your likelihood of obtaining contracts from the federal government and prime contractors
  • Government procurement reps will be on hand at end of workshop to answer any questions you may have.
Pace SBDC business advisors will also be conducting 1:1 counseling sessions with small business clients at the New York Public Library’s Business Library (SIBL) on Wednesday May 3rd.

Columbia-Harlem SBDC:
Columbia is hosting the NYC SBDC Pitch Competition on Tuesday, May 2 from 6pm-8pm in room 142 at Uris Hall. Small business owner/clients of Pace, Baruch and Columbia SBDCs will compete for cash prizes of $2,500, $1,000 and $500 to be judged by sponsor Capital One Bankers, a SBA lender. Anyone may come to view the competition and pick up some tips about pitching.

Staten Island SBDC:

Staten Island SBDC is presenting a webinar in partnership with Google My Business/Get Our Cities on the Map. It will be on May 2nd from 10:30am – 11:30am.

Mid-Hudson SBDC:

For each day of Small Business Week, the Mid-Hudson SBDC will profiling a different client on their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/midhudsonsbdc/.

Canton SBDC:

During National Small Business Week (April 30 - May 6, 2017), the Canton SBDC will host several local training workshops!

Workshop: Video for Small Business

Presenter: Molly & Cory Williams, Railroad Productions

On Monday, May 1, Molly and Cory Williams of Railroad Productions in Canton, NY will host “Video for Small Business” to share their insights on different video methods to promote your small business through online video marketing. From Facebook Live, to Instagram Stories or a professional promotional film, Molly and Cory will offer tips on the actual filming process as well as lay out promotional strategies based on different marketing goals and social media platforms. And watch out, they may ask for volunteers to sit down for an impromptu film shoot! This workshop was made possible by the collaboration of SUNY Canton's SBDC, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Alcoa Foundation, Railroad Productions, and the Canton Free Library.

Through our partnership with Google, Wednesday, May 3rd, will feature "Grow Your Business Online" in Potsdam, NY. Attendees will look at acquiring a custom email with Gmail, as well as how customers find their business online and how to promote through methods like search engine optimization (SEO) and online advertising. Presented by Julie Johnson, owner of Optimal Impressions, in collaboration with SUNY Canton's SBDC, the U.S. Small Business Administration, Clarkson's Shipley Center for Innovation, and the Alcoa Foundation.

Startup Entrepreneur Workshop  in partnership with “Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow”. The workshop will empower new Americans as well as more established community members in the following areas of understanding:
  • Business Analysis
  • Legal Structures
  • Financial Viability
New Americans often are arriving from outside US borders with finely honed entrepreneurial talents, yet are stymied by so many cultural, linguistic and legal challenges. The Brooklyn SBDC has an established history in meeting the needs of all small business owners. Newcomers to this country in particular the needs of New Americans that just need a little extra effort in assisting them in navigating the daunting administrative pitfalls that even pose challenges to American born entrepreneurs. This workshop is one of the first steps showing our new American entrepreneurs how the SBA champions their growth in business. In every sense, this workshop is in keeping with the spirit of “National Small Business Week”!!!

Rockland SBDC:

The Rockland SBDC will present two events, focused primarily on presenting the benefits of accessing government markets via BidLinx for small business. One will occurr on 4/27 and the other one during Small Business week in conjunction with Community Capital.
